Your HVAC system is acting up. Maybe repairs are becoming more frequent. Maybe it’s just not cooling like it used to. And now you’re wondering: should I keep putting money into this thing, or is it time to replace it?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from Jackson homeowners, and honestly, it’s a question where the industry sometimes fails you. Some contractors push replacement because it’s a bigger sale. Others string along repairs on systems that should have been retired years ago.

Here’s the honest guidance you need.

How Long HVAC Systems Typically Last

Let’s start with averages, understanding that “average” hides a lot of variation:

The Mississippi factor: Our climate is harder on cooling equipment than the national average. Seven months of heavy AC use (April through October) plus high humidity means compressors and other components work harder and wear faster. This rule provides a useful gut-check. Multiply the age of your system (in years) by the cost of the proposed repair. If the result exceeds $5,000, replacement usually makes more sense.

Example: Your 12-year-old AC needs a $500 repair. 12 × $500 = $6,000. That repair likely isn’t worth it.

Another example: Your 8-year-old system needs a $400 repair. 8 × $400 = $3,200. Probably worth repairing.

This isn’t a hard rule—just a starting point for discussion.

The 50% Threshold

If a repair costs more than 50% of what a new system would cost, replacement almost always wins. You’re too close to buying a new system anyway, and repairs on aging equipment often just buy a few months before something else fails.

The Frequency Factor

How often are you calling for repairs? Once every few years on an older system is normal. Once or twice a year signals a pattern. Three or more service calls annually means you’re likely throwing good money after bad.

Add up what you’ve spent on repairs over the past 2-3 years. If that total approaches what you’d spend on a new system, you’ve been financing a replacement already—just slowly and without getting any new equipment for it.

The Efficiency Gap

Older systems are dramatically less efficient than new ones. If you have a 10-12 SEER system from the early 2000s, a new 16-18 SEER system could cut your cooling costs by 30-50%.

When considering repair vs. replace, factor in ongoing operating costs—not just the one-time repair bill. That $2,000 repair on a 10 SEER dinosaur might “save” you money this month, but the inefficiency costs you every day it runs.

The Parts Availability Problem

Manufacturers typically produce replacement parts for 10-15 years after a model is discontinued. Beyond that, parts become scarce, expensive, or unavailable entirely.

If your system requires a component that’s hard to source or obsolete, even a modest repair can become expensive or impossible. This is increasingly common with R-22 refrigerant systems (phased out for environmental reasons)—the refrigerant itself is now extremely expensive, making any leak repair financially painful.

Compressors are expensive, but 8 years is young for a system. If everything else is working well and maintenance has been regular, this repair likely makes sense. You could get another 7-10 years from the system.

Scenario 2: 15-year-old system, refrigerant leak, $900 repair (this time)
Red flags here. Refrigerant leaks tend to recur. On a 15-year-old system, you’re likely looking at more issues in the near future. This repair buys time, but start planning for replacement. Probably don’t spend more money on this unit after this.

Scenario 3: 12-year-old system, capacitor failure, $250 repair
Easy call—repair it. Capacitors are wear items that commonly fail. This is routine maintenance, not a warning sign. System has plenty of life left.

Scenario 4: 18-year-old R-22 system, needs refrigerant recharge
This is a replacement situation. R-22 is prohibitively expensive now, and needing a recharge means there’s a leak somewhere. Even if you recharge, you’re paying premium prices for obsolete refrigerant on borrowed time. Invest in new equipment instead.

When Replacement Makes Sense Even if Repairs Are Possible

Sometimes the math says “repair,” but other factors tip toward replacement:

Major renovation or addition. If you’re adding space to your home, your current system might be undersized anyway. Upgrading now makes more sense than repairing equipment that won’t handle the new load.

Significant efficiency improvements available. If you’re currently operating a 10 SEER system and could replace with an 18 SEER unit, the energy savings might justify replacement even when repair is technically viable.

Peace of mind. There’s value in knowing you won’t face an emergency breakdown next August. If anxiety about reliability affects your quality of life, that’s a legitimate factor in the decision.

What Extends System Life

  • Change filters regularly. Monthly during heavy-use seasons. This is the single most impactful maintenance you can perform.
  • Annual professional maintenance. Tune-ups catch small problems before they become expensive failures.
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear. Maintain 2+ feet of clearance around your condenser.
  • Address problems promptly. Strange noises, weak airflow, or odd smells warrant investigation—not ignored.
  • Don’t overwork the system. Reasonable thermostat settings (not 65°F on 100-degree days) reduce strain.
