SEER Explained Simply

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It measures how much cooling an AC system produces compared to the electricity it consumes, averaged over an entire cooling season.

  2. “What’s the payback period on upgrading from X SEER to Y SEER for my home?” Good contractors can run these numbers. Vague answers suggest they’re just pushing higher-margin equipment.
  3. “What’s your installation process for ensuring the system performs to rated efficiency?” Proper commissioning—verifying refrigerant charge, airflow, and electrical—matters enormously.
  4. “Have you evaluated my ductwork?” A contractor focused on selling equipment rather than solving problems might skip this entirely.

The Honest Truth

SEER ratings matter. In Mississippi’s demanding climate, higher efficiency translates to real money saved over the life of your system.

But SEER isn’t everything. A quality 16-18 SEER system, properly sized and expertly installed in a home with sound ductwork, will often outperform a premium 22 SEER system that was oversized, hastily installed, or connected to leaky ducts.
